A Town Rich in History and Heritage
Established in 1860, Penola is a historic town in South Australia's Limestone Coast region. Named after the Aboriginal word meaning 'swamp', Penola has grown from a small settlement to become the heart of the world-renowned Coonawarra wine region.
Penola holds special significance as the place where Saint Mary MacKillop and Father Julian Tenison Woods established the first school of the Sisters of St Joseph in 1866. The Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre celebrates this important heritage.
The Coonawarra wine region, centered around Penola, is famous for its terra rossa soil and exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. With over 20 cellar doors within minutes of town, Penola is truly the gateway to one of Australia's premier wine regions.
